Mountain rebels, a hungry boy and the powder keg of the Balkans.

In the last years of the Ottoman Empire, Macedonia and the Balkans burn with uprisings, raids and wars, and Ömer Seyfettin, who served there as a young officer, writes about them from the inside. In Bomba, the young Bulgarian rebel Boris and his wife Magda sit by the fire on a wild February night, both gripped by the same strange dread. In Aleko, little Ali, a Turkish village boy who speaks perfect Greek, wanders the empty roads near Gallipoli in search of his family as war closes in, until a chance meeting gives him a new name and a dangerous part to play. In Hürriyet Bayrakları, a traveller in a Macedonian town watches the parades celebrating the 1908 revolution and wonders whose holiday it really is.

Tense, fast-moving and often ending with a jolt, these are some of the most famous stories in Turkish literature.

How it opens

Reading Bomba ve Diğer Hikâyeler in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Turkish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Turkish feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
