About the book

El libro de las mil noches y una noche by Anonymous is a public-domain classic. In Passage you read the full text in Spanish, marked intermediate and filed under fantasy.

Every night, a new story. Every dawn, one more day to live.

Betrayed by his wife, King Schahriar swears no woman will ever deceive him again: each night he marries a new bride, and each morning he has her put to death. Then Schahrazada, the clever daughter of his vizier, offers herself as his next wife, with a plan of her own. She begins a tale, and stops at dawn just when it gets exciting.

This first volume opens the famous cycle with some of its best-loved stories: the merchant who must answer to a vengeful efrit, the poor old fisherman who pulls a sealed copper jar from the sea, and the Baghdad porter who spends an extraordinary night with three mysterious young women. Tales hide inside tales, full of jinn, enchanted kingdoms and dangerous love.

This Spanish edition follows the famously literal French translation by J. C. Mardrus, far bolder and more sensual than the children's versions most readers know.

Reading El libro de las mil noches y una noche in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Spanish feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
