About the book
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley was first published in 1818. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked advanced and filed under horror and science fiction.
He wanted to conquer death. He succeeded, and then he ran.
Far out on the Arctic ice, the explorer Robert Walton rescues a half-frozen stranger. The man is Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant young scientist from Geneva, and the story he tells is meant as a warning. Driven by ambition, Victor spent two years in secret, piecing together a body and hunting for the spark that would give it life. On a dreary November night, the creature opens its eyes, and Victor flees in horror from what he has made.
Abandoned by his maker and rejected by everyone he meets, the creature learns to speak, to read and to suffer. Soon he begins to wonder why he was made, and who should pay for his loneliness.
Begun when Mary Shelley was just eighteen and published in 1818, Frankenstein is often called the first science-fiction novel, and its creature has haunted stage and screen ever since.

Reading Frankenstein in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate English book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
