About the book

Gulliver's Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World by Jonathan Swift was first published in 1726. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked intermediate and filed under fantasy.

Shipwrecked on a strange shore, Lemuel Gulliver wakes up pinned to the ground by a web of tiny cords, and by people barely six inches tall.

A ship's surgeon who cannot keep away from the sea, Gulliver first lands in Lilliput, a miniature empire whose ministers win office by dancing on a tightrope and whose war with neighbouring Blefuscu began over which end of a boiled egg to break. Later voyages turn the tables: in Brobdingnag he becomes the pocket-sized pet of a giant king, and stranger lands follow, from the flying island of Laputa and its absent-minded scholars to a country ruled by wise, reasoning horses.

Told in the sober voice of a traveller's journal, each adventure is also a sly mirror held up to Swift's own Europe.

Jonathan Swift's 1726 satire has been loved as a children's fantasy and feared as one of the sharpest attacks on human vanity ever written. It works brilliantly as both.

Reading Gulliver's Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday English feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
