About the book

La bolsa de huesos by Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg was first published in 1896. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked intermediate and filed under mystery and crime. It runs to about 19,800 words.

A bag of bones. A missing rib. A doctor who cannot stop asking questions.

Back in Buenos Aires after a long scientific expedition, the narrator, a doctor and naturalist, accepts an odd gift from a friend: a bag of bones left behind by a medical student who once lodged with a family on Calle Tucumán. When he finally lays out the skeleton, he finds a young man of about twenty-four with a remarkably fine skull, and one strange detail: the fourth left rib, the one over the heart, is missing.

Then, in a colleague's study, he sees a second skeleton, almost identical and missing the very same rib. Coincidence? Helped by his friend Manuel, a phrenologist who is never wrong, the narrator sets off after the elusive student who left the bones behind, on a trail that begins to smell of poison.

Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg's playful 1896 mystery, written in the age of Sherlock Holmes, is considered the first Argentine detective novel.

Reading La bolsa de huesos in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Spanish feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
