Halfway along the road of his life, a man finds himself lost in a dark wood, and the only way out leads down.

Dante, a Florentine poet, has strayed from the right path, and three wild beasts block his climb towards the light. Help comes from an unexpected guide: the shade of Virgil, the great poet of ancient Rome, sent by Beatrice, the woman Dante loved and lost, to lead him through the kingdoms of the dead.

Their road descends through the nine circles of Hell, where every sin earns a punishment that fits it, then climbs the mountain of Purgatory and finally rises through the heavens of Paradise. On the way Dante meets popes and poets, lovers and traitors, and asks each of them for their story.

This complete edition holds all one hundred cantos of the Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso in the original Italian. Seven centuries on, the poem remains the foundation of the Italian language and one of the summits of world literature.

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Italian. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

• a natural translation of that exact sentence,
• a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
• the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
• all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate Italian book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
