About the book

Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon was first published in 1862. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked advanced and filed under mystery and crime, romance and thriller and suspense.

A golden-haired bride, a missing friend, and a secret hidden at Audley Court.

Lucy Graham is a penniless governess with flaxen curls, soft blue eyes and a laugh that charms everyone. When she marries Sir Michael Audley, a wealthy widower many years her senior, she becomes mistress of his rambling old house in Essex. Meanwhile George Talboys returns from the Australian goldfields with a fortune, eager to see the young wife he left behind years ago, only to meet with heartbreaking news.

His old friend Robert Audley, Sir Michael's easygoing nephew, takes George to the country to lift his spirits. Then George vanishes without a word, and lazy Robert, who has never cared much about anything, finds he cannot stop asking questions, even as the answers lead closer and closer to home.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon's 1862 bestseller was the most famous "sensation novel" of its day, and it still reads like a modern thriller.

Reading Lady Audley's Secret in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate English book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
