About the book

Les Trois Mousquetaires by Alexandre Dumas was first published in 1844. In Passage you read the full text in the original French, marked intermediate and filed under historical fiction.

A yellow horse, fifteen crowns and a hot temper. One for all, and all for one.

April 1625. Young d'Artagnan rides out of Gascony on a comically ugly yellow pony, with his father's sword, a letter for Monsieur de Tréville, captain of the King's Musketeers, and strict advice never to swallow an insult. He follows that advice a little too well: within hours of reaching Paris he has challenged three musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, to three duels on the same day.

Instead of killing each other, the four end up side by side against the Cardinal's guards, and a legendary friendship is born. Soon d'Artagnan is in love with Constance Bonacieux, the Queen's linen-maid, and caught in a dangerous game between Queen Anne, the Duke of Buckingham and the all-powerful Cardinal Richelieu, whose agents include the mysterious Milady.

Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckler has never gone out of print and has inspired countless films. The Three Musketeers is still the gold standard of adventure.

Reading Les Trois Mousquetaires in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in French. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday French feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
