About the book

Amalia by José Mármol was first published in 1855. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked advanced and filed under historical fiction, romance and thriller and suspense. It runs to about 231,600 words.

A wounded fugitive. A beautiful widow. A city ruled by terror.

Buenos Aires, May 1840. Under the dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas, the dreaded Mazorca hunts down every opponent. One dark night, young Eduardo Belgrano and his friends try to slip away by boat to join the exiles fighting Rosas from across the river. They are betrayed, and Eduardo is left gravely wounded.

He is saved by his friend Daniel Bello, a brilliant double agent who poses as a loyal supporter of Rosas while secretly conspiring against him. Daniel hides Eduardo in the elegant house of his cousin Amalia, a young widow from Tucumán. As Eduardo recovers, love grows between them, but spies are everywhere, and Rosas's ruthless sister-in-law is already on the scent.

José Mármol's Amalia, often called the first Argentine novel, blends romance, espionage and history. It is still read in Argentine schools and was filmed in 1914.

Reading Amalia in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate Spanish book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
