About the book
Camera Obscura by Hildebrand was first published in 1839. In Passage you read the full text in the original Dutch, marked advanced and filed under historical fiction. It runs to about 156,600 words.
Stiff tea parties, nervous students and the most unpleasant man in Haarlem. Dutch life in the 1830s, caught in a lens.
Behind the pen name Hildebrand hides Nicolaas Beets, a young Leiden student with a sharp eye and a warm heart. In Camera Obscura he sketches the people around him: boys at play, passengers on the canal barge and the stagecoach, tea parties where nobody dares say a thing, the ferryman, the barber and the cab driver.
The longer stories are the heart of the book. In “The Stastok Family” Hildebrand visits a sleepy provincial town and its very proper household; in “The Kegge Family” a loud, rich family back from the West Indies dazzles a stuffy Dutch town; “Gerrit Witse” follows a student through exams, love and grief; and “An Unpleasant Man in the Haarlemmerhout” introduces the grumpy Mr Nurks.
First published in 1839 and reprinted ever since, Camera Obscura is one of the best-loved Dutch classics: gently ironic, very funny and surprisingly tender.

Reading Camera Obscura in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Dutch. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate Dutch book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
