About the book

De H.B.S.-tijd van Joop ter Heul by Cissy van Marxveldt was first published in 1919. In Passage you read the full text in the original Dutch, marked beginner and filed under romance and young adult. It runs to about 85,900 words.

A secret club. A very strict father. And a schoolgirl who cannot stop writing letters.

Joop ter Heul has only just scraped into the third year of high school, and Pa won't let her forget it. No tennis, no parties — and certainly no joining the club the liveliest girls in her class are starting. So Joop joins anyway, as a secret member, while her grown-up sister Julie drifts through life in silk stockings and false curls.

It all pours into her chatty letters to her friend Net and into her diary: the vinegary German teacher, her clever best friend Pop, the club with an unpronounceable name made from the members' initials, and every narrow escape from Pa's piercing questions.

Cissy van Marxveldt's Joop ter Heul's High School Years (1919) is the classic Dutch girls' book — so loved that Anne Frank borrowed the names of Joop's friends, among them Kitty, for the imaginary readers of her own diary.

How it opens

Nou, daar gaat-ie-dan-inderdaad!

Reading De H.B.S.-tijd van Joop ter Heul in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Dutch. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of Dutch and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
