About the book
Joop ter Heul's problemen by Cissy van Marxveldt was first published in 1921. In Passage you read the full text in the original Dutch, marked beginner and filed under romance and young adult. It runs to about 53,200 words.
School is over. Her sister is getting married. And Leo van Dil keeps turning up at the door.
Joop ter Heul has left school and spends her “heavenly” summer stuck in town, because her elegant, nervous sister Julie is marrying Jog in August. Her brother Kees, a brand-new law student, is mooning over the lovely Pop. Then Ma, worn out by the wedding, is sent to the seaside to rest — and Joop is parked in the newlyweds' tiny flat.
At the club, her old friends suddenly all seem to know what to do with the future — Noortje is even secretly engaged to a lieutenant she met in Lucerne. Only Joop has no idea. Meanwhile Leo van Dil, with his car, sailing boat and banker father, has a funny way of turning up just when the baker is due.
Told in Joop's own cheeky, warm voice, this second Joop ter Heul book (1921) belongs to the series generations of Dutch girls grew up with — Anne Frank among them.

How it opens
Reading Joop ter Heul's problemen in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Dutch. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of Dutch and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
