About the book
De zoon van Dik Trom by C. Joh. Kieviet was first published in 1907. In Passage you read the full text in the original Dutch, marked beginner and filed under children. It runs to about 49,100 words.
Dik Trom has grown up. His son has not — and he is every bit as mischievous as his father.
The village rascal is now a cheerful grocer who drives his cart to customers, keeps his old parents in comfort and marries Anneke, his sweetheart since childhood, to the delight of the whole village. Even the old “witch” of the Back Lane hangs out a little flag on the wedding day.
Before long a son arrives: little Jan, or Jantje. Thin where his father was round but just as bold, Jantje soon has the village in an uproar — at school, on his birthday, on a disastrous outing, in a snowball battle for a snow castle and, inevitably, in a running feud with the ever-grumpy Flipsen, who has never forgiven the Trom family for anything.
C. Joh. Kieviet's 1907 sequel brings back the warmth and slapstick of From the Life of Dik Trom for a new generation. It has been a children's favourite in the Netherlands for over a century.

How it opens
ʼt Was met den kruidenierswinkel van den ouden Trom uitstekend gegaan. Dat was geen wonder, want Vrouw Trom was eene zindelijke vrouw, die er voor zorgde, dat alles in den winkel er keurig netjes uitzag. De koperen weegschalen waren zoo prachtig geschuurd, dat zij haast wel van goud schenen, de toonbanken zagen er brandhelder uit, en de koopwaren waren van de beste kwaliteit.
Reading De zoon van Dik Trom in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Dutch. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of Dutch and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
