About the book

Sprookjes van Grimm: tweede verzameling by Jacob en Wilhelm Grimm was first published in 1812. In Passage you read the full text in the Dutch translation by M. van Eeden-van Vloten, marked beginner and filed under children and fantasy. It runs to about 58,600 words.

A poisoned apple. A name no one can guess. A princess asleep behind a wall of thorns.

This second collection gathers dozens of the brothers Grimm's most famous tales, each one complete in itself. Here is Snow White with her wicked stepmother and seven dwarfs; Rumpelstiltskin, who spins straw into gold for a terrible price; and Briar Rose, the sleeping beauty waiting a hundred years for her prince.

There are proud princesses humbled, like the one who mocks King Thrushbeard; magical gifts, from the table that sets itself to the gold-spitting donkey and the cudgel in the sack; a golden goose that everyone gets stuck to; six brothers turned into swans; tiny Thumbling, the robber bridegroom, clever thieves, loyal animals and a tailor who talks his way into heaven.

Collected in Germany from 1812 onward, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's tales shaped the fairy tale for the whole world. Told in this Dutch translation by M. van Eeden-van Vloten in short, simple sentences, they are perfect for learners.

How it opens

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Dutch. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of Dutch and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
