Two sisters in mourning walk past him on a Buenos Aires street. One of them was once the love of his life.
Luis Rohán has spent five years working a ranch in distant San Luis. Back in the city one April morning, he sees the Elizalde sisters go by, and the past comes flooding back: the family that welcomed him when he was twenty, witty Mercedes teasing him at the piano, and little Eglé, who once clung to him on a moonlit balcony and swore she would love him forever.
Years later, home from Europe, Rohán found that child grown into a beautiful young woman, and love came quickly. So did something darker: a restless, gnawing jealousy that fed on every glance. Now, curious to know what he will feel, he decides to see her again.
Story of a Troubled Love (1908), Horacio Quiroga's first novel, is a tense psychological tale of love and jealousy, told in plain, modern prose by the future master of the Latin American short story.

How it opens
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of Spanish and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
