About the book
Pasado amor by Horacio Quiroga was first published in 1929. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked beginner and filed under romance. It runs to about 21,800 words.
A widower returns to the jungle where he lost everything. A girl with velvet eyes is waiting.
Two years after his young wife died on their remote yerba mate plantation, Morán comes back to Misiones without warning. He finds his stone house full of memories, his fields swallowed by weeds, and the frontier village of Iviraromí exactly as he left it. Strong, reserved and fiercely independent, he throws himself back into work.
At the home of the Iñíguez, a proud and wealthy family of Peruvian landowners ruled by cold, calculating young Salvador, Morán meets the youngest daughter again. Magdalena was a child when he left; now she is a devout, kind-hearted young woman, and her grave, expectant gaze unsettles him more than he cares to admit.
Horacio Quiroga's last novel, Past Love (1929), is a love story set against the harsh beauty of the Argentine jungle. Clear, direct and deeply felt, it is an approachable way into the master of the Latin American short story.

How it opens
Lo que menos esperaban Aureliana y sus hijas, en aquel mediodía de mayo, era ver detenerse ante el portón al break que llegaba del puerto, y descender de él a su patrón Morán. Las chicas corrieron de un lado para otro, gritando todas la misma cosa a su madre, que a su vez se hallaba bastante aturdida; de modo que cuando acudían todas presurosas al molinete, ya Morán lo había transpuesto y se dirigía a ellas con aquella clara y franca sonrisa que constituía su atractivo mayor.
Reading Pasado amor in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of Spanish and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
