About the book

A snake hunter. A vision in the jungle. A cult of stranglers who want him dead.
In the Sundarbans, the steaming swamps of the Ganges delta, lives Tremal-Naik, a fearless hunter of snakes and tigers, with his faithful servant Kammamuri and his tame tiger Darma. One evening, by a stream deep in the jungle, a woman of dazzling beauty appears before him, lets out a long, heartbreaking moan and vanishes. Her name, she tells him later, is Ada, and he cannot forget her.
When he follows her trail, he discovers she is a prisoner of the Thugs, a secret sect of stranglers who worship the goddess Kali and sacrifice their victims in hidden temples. To save her, Tremal-Naik will have to enter their underground world, and face an enemy that strikes without warning.
Published in 1895, this exotic thriller launched Salgari's great Indian cycle and introduced characters who would later join Sandokan's adventures.

How it opens
Il Gange, questo famoso fiume celebrato dagli indiani antichi e moderni, le cui acque son reputate sacre da quei popoli, dopo d’aver solcato le nevose montagne dell’Himalaya e le ricche provincie del Sirinagar, di Delhi, di Odhe, di Bahare, di Bengala, a duecentoventi miglia dal mare dividesi in due bracci, formando un delta gigantesco, intricato, meraviglioso e forse unico.
Reading I misteri della jungla nera in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Italian. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Italian feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
