About the book

Le tigri di Mompracem by Emilio Salgari was first published in 1900. In Passage you read the full text in the original Italian, marked intermediate and filed under romance, thriller and suspense and young adult. It runs to about 90,200 words.

A pirate king. A wild island. A love that could destroy him.

From the island of Mompracem, off the coast of Borneo, the fearsome Sandokan, "the Tiger of Malaysia", wages war on the British who robbed him of his throne and his family. His fleet of prahus terrifies the seas, and at his side is his loyal friend, the cool-headed Portuguese adventurer Yanez.

But Sandokan has heard rumours of the "Pearl of Labuan", a young woman of extraordinary beauty living on the nearby British island. Driven by curiosity, he sails for Labuan, and a bloody battle leaves him wounded on enemy soil. When he wakes, the Pearl is standing beside him, and the Tiger's heart is no longer his own.

The first Sandokan novel made Emilio Salgari Italy's king of adventure. Swashbuckling and romantic, it inspired the legendary 1976 TV series starring Kabir Bedi.

How it opens

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Italian. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Italian feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
