About the book

L'Oiseau bleu by Maurice Maeterlinck was first published in 1909. In Passage you read the full text in the original French, marked beginner and filed under children and fantasy. It runs to about 30,400 words.

On Christmas Eve, two poor children set out to find the bird that brings happiness.

Tyltyl and Mytyl, a woodcutter's son and daughter, peek through the shutters at the rich children celebrating across the road. Then an old fairy, Bérylune, bursts into their cottage. Her little girl is very ill, and only the Blue Bird can save her. She gives Tyltyl a magic diamond that reveals the soul of things.

One turn of the diamond, and Bread, Sugar, Fire, Water and Milk step out as living characters, while the Dog and the Cat can suddenly talk. Guided by Light, this odd little band travels to the Land of Memory, the Palace of Night and the Forest, chasing a bird that never stays blue for long.

The Blue Bird, Maurice Maeterlinck's fairy play, has delighted audiences since its 1908 première in Moscow and inspired films in 1918, 1940 and 1976. Its simple, playful dialogue makes it a joy to read.

Reading L'Oiseau bleu in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in French. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of French and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
