About the book
La barraca by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez was first published in 1898. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked intermediate and filed under historical fiction and thriller and suspense. It runs to about 56,000 words.
A field no one dares to farm. A family brave or foolish enough to try.
In the green, fertile huerta outside Valencia, one patch of land has lain abandoned for ten years. Its old tenant, Tío Barret, was thrown off by a heartless landlord, and in his despair he killed him. Since then the whole community has made a silent pact: no one will ever work those fields again, so that no landlord may profit from them.
Then a stranger arrives. Batiste, a hard-working peasant with his wife and children, rebuilds the ruined cabin and starts to plough. To the neighbours, led by the bully Pimentó, this is betrayal. What begins with insults and cold stares grows steadily more dangerous.
Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's The Cabin (1898) is his most celebrated Valencian novel: a fierce, sun-drenched story of pride, poverty and the pressure of the crowd. Widely read in schools and adapted for television, it grips from the first page.

Reading La barraca in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Spanish feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
