About the book
La Guerre des mondes by H. G. Wells was first published in 1898. In Passage you read the full text in French, marked intermediate and filed under science fiction.
Across the gulf of space, cold minds are watching Earth. And now they are coming.
At the end of the nineteenth century, nobody believes that life on Mars could pose any danger to us. Then a strange "falling star" lands on the common near Woking, in the quiet English countryside. The narrator joins the curious crowd around the huge metal cylinder, alongside the astronomer Ogilvy, until its lid slowly begins to unscrew.
What crawls out has no interest in talking. With towering fighting machines and a deadly Heat-Ray, the Martians march toward London, and the narrator must cross a burning countryside to find his wife again while order collapses all around him.
This is a classic French translation of H. G. Wells's 1898 novel, the story that invented the alien invasion. It inspired Orson Welles's famous 1938 radio broadcast, Steven Spielberg's film, and countless other invasions ever since.

Reading La Guerre des mondes in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in French. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday French feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
