About the book

The Time Machine by H. G. Wells was first published in 1895. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked intermediate and filed under science fiction.

He tells his dinner guests that time is just another direction. A week later he limps in, filthy and starving, with a story to tell.

In his comfortable house in Richmond, the Time Traveller (we never learn his name) shows a group of sceptical friends a tiny model machine and makes it vanish before their eyes. The following Thursday he arrives late for dinner, dusty, limping and ravenous, and after a plate of mutton he begins the strangest tale they have ever heard.

He has travelled to the year 802,701. The Thames valley has become a vast garden dotted with crumbling palaces, home to the Eloi, gentle, childlike people who play in the sunshine and seem to fear nothing except the dark. But when his machine disappears, he begins to suspect that this paradise is hiding something, and that he may never get home.

Published in 1895, Wells's short novel gave the world the very idea of a time machine and remains one of the cornerstones of science fiction.

Reading The Time Machine in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday English feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
