About the book
Le Livre de la jungle by Rudyard Kipling was first published in 1894. In Passage you read the full text in French, marked intermediate and filed under children and fantasy.
Raised by wolves, hunted by a tiger: Mowgli’s story begins here.
On a hot evening in the Seeonee hills, Father Wolf finds a naked baby at the mouth of his cave: a man’s cub who has escaped the lame tiger Shere Khan. Spoken for by Baloo, the sleepy brown bear who teaches the Law of the Jungle, and bought into the pack with a freshly killed bull by Bagheera the black panther, Mowgli grows up among the wolves. But Shere Khan has not forgotten him.
Alongside the three Mowgli stories come four more tales: Kotick the white seal, searching the oceans for a beach where hunters never come; the brave mongoose Rikki-tikki-tavi, at war with two cobras in an Indian garden; Little Toomai, who longs to see the elephants dance; and the grumbling army animals of “Her Majesty’s Servants”.
Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 classic has never stopped finding new readers, and its animals live on in countless adaptations, from Disney’s films to the Scouts’ Cub pack.

Reading Le Livre de la jungle in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in French. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday French feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
