About the book
The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling was first published in 1894. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked beginner and filed under children and fantasy. It runs to about 50,700 words.
A boy raised by wolves. A tiger who wants him dead.
When a human baby toddles into a wolf's cave in the Indian jungle, Mother Wolf decides to keep him and names him Mowgli, "the little frog". The wise bear Baloo teaches him the Law of the Jungle, the black panther Bagheera watches over him — and the lame tiger Shere Khan never stops waiting for his chance.
Mowgli's adventures fill the first half of this collection, but the other tales are just as unforgettable. In "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", a brave young mongoose defends a family from two deadly cobras; in "The White Seal", Kotick searches the seas for a safe home for his people; and in "Toomai of the Elephants", a boy witnesses the secret elephant dance.
Rudyard Kipling's 1894 stories have enchanted generations of readers and inspired Disney's famous films.

How it opens
It was seven o’clock of a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day’s rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived. “Augrh!” said Father Wolf. “It is time to hunt again.”
Reading The Jungle Book in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of English and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
