About the book

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott was first published in 1868. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked intermediate and filed under historical fiction, romance and young adult.

Four sisters, one hard winter, and all the joys and storms of growing up.

With their father away in the Civil War and money painfully short, the March sisters face a Christmas without presents. Meg longs for pretty things, Jo for adventure and a life as a writer, shy Beth for a peaceful home, and young Amy for elegance and art. Guided by their wise mother, Marmee, they set out to become true "little women".

Next door lives Laurie, the lonely boy in the big Laurence house, who soon becomes part of the family. Attic plays, a homemade newspaper, quarrels, burnt hair and first loves fill their days, while bigger trials wait as the girls grow up with very different dreams.

This edition includes both parts of the story, following the sisters from girlhood into their first years as young women. Loved since 1868, Little Women has inspired countless adaptations, including Greta Gerwig's 2019 film.

Reading Little Women in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday English feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
