About the book
Martin Eden by Jack London was first published in 1909. In Passage you read the full text in Italian, marked intermediate and filed under romance.
A sailor walks into a room full of books, meets a girl who reads poetry, and decides to become someone else.
Martin Eden is young, broad-shouldered and rough-spoken, a seaman who has knocked about the world since boyhood. When Arthur Morse, whom he has rescued out of a brawl, brings him home to dinner, Martin feels huge and clumsy among the piano, the paintings and the piles of books. Then he meets Arthur's sister Ruth, pale, gentle and refined, and falls in love on the spot.
To deserve her, Martin sets out to remake himself from the ground up. He reads through the night, corrects his grammar, haunts the public library and resolves to become a writer, while poverty and rejection slips pile up. But the more he learns, the more sharply he sees the world Ruth comes from.
Jack London's most personal novel, drawn from his own climb out of poverty, is especially loved in Italy, where it inspired Pietro Marcello's acclaimed 2019 film.

Reading Martin Eden in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Italian. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Italian feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
