About the book

Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie was first published in 1911. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked beginner and filed under children and fantasy. It runs to about 47,000 words.

Second star to the right, and straight on till morning.

Wendy, John and Michael Darling live an ordinary London life, watched over by a dog called Nana who serves as their nursemaid. Then one night a strange boy flies in through the nursery window, looking for the shadow he lost there.

He is Peter Pan, the boy who refuses to grow up, and with a sprinkle of fairy dust from the jealous little fairy Tinker Bell, he teaches the children to fly. Together they soar away to Neverland, an island of mermaids, Lost Boys and pirates led by the fearsome Captain Hook, who has a score to settle with Peter and a crocodile ticking on his trail.

J. M. Barrie's playful, bittersweet tale of 1911 created one of the most enduring myths of childhood.

How it opens

All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, “Oh, why can’t you remain like this for ever!” This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end.

The first lines of Peter Pan (1911), in the original English. The text is in the public domain.

Reading Peter Pan in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of English and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
