About the book

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum was first published in 1900. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked beginner and filed under children and fantasy.

A Kansas cyclone, a pair of silver shoes, and a road of yellow brick to follow.

Dorothy lives on the grey Kansas prairie with Uncle Henry, Aunt Em and her little black dog, Toto, until a cyclone lifts their whole house into the sky and sets it down in the bright, strange country of the Munchkins. The good Witch of the North tells her that only the great Wizard of the Emerald City can help her get home.

Along the way Dorothy gathers three unlikely companions: a Scarecrow who wants brains, a Tin Woodman who longs for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion in search of courage. Together they face dark forests, fierce beasts and a field of deadly poppies, hoping that Oz can grant all their wishes.

Published in 1900 with W. W. Denslow’s pictures, L. Frank Baum’s story became America’s best-loved fairy tale and inspired the 1939 film starring Judy Garland.

Reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of English and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
