A boy who builds a cannon, lands in jail at eleven, and grows up to map the human brain.
Long before his Nobel Prize, Santiago Ramón y Cajal was the despair of his family. Born in 1852 in a humble village of Navarre and raised in small Aragonese towns, he preferred birds, drawing and stone-throwing battles to Latin grammar. His stern father, a country doctor, tried everything to tame him: strict friars in Jaca, then apprenticeships with a barber and a shoemaker.
Cajal tells it all with wit and disarming honesty: the wooden cannon that earned him three days in the village jail, his secret passion for painting, the moonlit night his father led him over the cemetery wall to collect bones for study, then medical school in Zaragoza, army service and near-fatal malaria in Cuba.
Written by one of the founders of modern neuroscience, Recollections of My Life is a beloved classic of Spanish autobiography: the portrait of a rebellious boy, and of how curiosity finds its way.

How it opens
Nací el 1.º de Mayo de 1852 en Petilla de Aragón, humilde lugar de Navarra, enclavado por singular capricho geográfico en medio de la provincia de Zaragoza, no lejos de Sos. Los azares de la profesión médica llevaron a mi padre, Justo Ramón Casasús, aragonés de pura cepa, y modesto cirujano por entonces, a la insignificante aldea donde vi la primera luz, y en la cual transcurrieron los dos primeros años de mi vida.
Reading Recuerdos de mi vida: Mi infancia y juventud in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked intermediate: comfortable once everyday Spanish feels familiar, with the harder sentences one tap away. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
