About the book
Ricordi d'infanzia e di scuola by Edmondo De Amicis was first published in 1901. In Passage you read the full text in the original Italian, marked beginner and filed under children. It runs to about 97,300 words.
Before he wrote Heart, he was a schoolboy too.
Edmondo De Amicis looks back on his own childhood in Cuneo, a small Piedmontese town between two rivers at the foot of the Alps. He remembers his first school and his first teacher, the bersaglieri marching home from the Crimean War, the excitement of 1859, a sudden passion for painting, his dreams of becoming an actor, a tenor, a lawyer, and the friendships, crushes and blunders of growing up.
The rest of the book gathers sketches of children and young people: dolls and marionettes, little pupils in white aprons, the hopes and fears of exam day, teenagers on the benches of the ginnasio, and even a balloon ascent.
Tender, funny and full of sharp observation, this 1901 collection by the author of Heart is one of the most downloaded Italian books on Project Gutenberg, and an easy, rewarding read for learners.

How it opens
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Italian. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked beginner, so it's a good first whole book if you know the basics of Italian and want something you can finish. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
