About the book

Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes was first published in 1605. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked advanced and filed under historical fiction.

He has read so many tales of chivalry that he decides to become a knight himself.

In a village of La Mancha lives a lean gentleman of about fifty who spends his days, and his money, on books about knights-errant, until his brain dries up and he believes every word. He renames himself Don Quixote, polishes his great-grandfather's rusty armour, saddles his bony old horse Rocinante and chooses a farm girl he has barely seen, Dulcinea del Toboso, as the lady of his heart.

With Sancho Panza, a plump, down-to-earth neighbour who comes along for the promise of an island to govern, he rides out to right the world's wrongs. Inns turn into castles, flocks of sheep into armies and windmills into giants, usually with painful results for both of them.

This edition contains both parts, from 1605 and 1615. Often called the first modern novel, Cervantes' comedy has inspired writers, painters, composers and filmmakers for more than four hundred years.

Reading Don Quijote in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate Spanish book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
