About the book
La guerra gaucha by Leopoldo Lugones was first published in 1905. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked advanced and filed under historical fiction. It runs to about 62,800 words.
Ragged horsemen against an empire. A war fought from the mountains by heroes history never named.
Between 1814 and 1818, Spain's royalist armies push down from Upper Peru into Salta, in the far north of today's Argentina, and the land itself rises against them. Gauchos on half-starved mules, in tattered clothes with iron spurs on their bare heels, strike from the ravines and forests and melt back into the mountains, helped by the people of the valleys.
Each of the twenty-two episodes is a scene from this anonymous resistance: an ambush, a country dance, a serenade, a vow, a messenger's ride, a trail followed through the brush. Lugones gives almost no dates or names, because the true hero is the people — until the legendary Güemes himself appears.
First published in 1905, The Gaucho War is famous for its dazzling, ornate prose, rich in rare words and mountain landscapes, and it inspired the landmark 1942 Argentine film. A demanding read — and an unforgettable one.

How it opens
La Guerra Gaucha no es una historia, aunque sean históricos su concepto y su fondo. Los episodios que la forman, intentan dar una idea, lo más clara posible, de la lucha sostenida por montoneras y republiquetas contra los ejércitos españoles que operaron en el Alto Perú y en Salta desde 1814 á 1818.
Reading La guerra gaucha in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate Spanish book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
