About the book
La vorágine by José Eustasio Rivera was first published in 1924. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked advanced and filed under historical fiction and thriller and suspense. It runs to about 80,000 words.
"I gambled my heart, and Violence won it."
Arturo Cova is a young poet from Bogotá, proud, restless and hot-tempered. Facing scandal, he runs away with Alicia, a girl he is not even sure he loves, and the couple flee east into the vast plains of Casanare, a world of cattle ranches, wild horses and men who settle every quarrel by force.
But the plains are only the beginning. A smooth-talking recruiter for the rubber trade appears with promises of fortune, and soon Cova is drawn deeper and deeper into the Amazon jungle, where rivers swallow men, the forest itself seems hostile, and rubber workers are held in brutal, debt-bound slavery.
José Eustasio Rivera's The Vortex (1924), presented as Cova's own manuscript, is a landmark of Latin American literature: a feverish adventure and a fierce denunciation of the rubber boom's atrocities. It is required reading in Colombia, and its jungle still feels alive on every page.

How it opens
De acuerdo con los deseos de S. S. he arreglado para la publicidad los manuscritos de Arturo Cova, remitidos a ese Ministerio por el Cónsul de Colombia en Manaos.
En esas páginas respeté el estilo y hasta las incorrecciones del infortunado escritor, subrayando únicamente los provincialismos de más carácter.
Reading La vorágine in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate Spanish book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
