About the book

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë was first published in 1847. In Passage you read the full text in the original English, marked advanced and filed under historical fiction and romance. It runs to about 184,200 words.

Poor, plain and alone — but never willing to be crushed.

Orphaned Jane Eyre grows up unloved in the house of her cruel aunt, then survives the cold and hunger of Lowood, a grim charity school. Through it all she holds on to one thing: a fierce sense of her own worth.

As a young woman she takes a post as governess at Thornfield Hall, a lonely mansion owned by the brooding, unpredictable Mr Rochester. A spark grows between them — but Thornfield hides something. Strange laughter echoes through the corridors at night, and no one will tell Jane where it comes from.

Told in Jane's own passionate voice, Jane Eyre shocked and thrilled Victorian readers, and remains one of the great love stories and coming-of-age novels ever written.

How it opens

There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating, that further outdoor exercise was now out of the question.

Reading Jane Eyre in Passage

Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in English. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:

  • a natural translation of that exact sentence,
  • a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
  • the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
  • all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.

It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate English book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
