About the book
Sonata de otoño. Sonata de invierno by Ramón del Valle-Inclán was first published in 1902. In Passage you read the full text in the original Spanish, marked advanced and filed under romance. It runs to about 45,600 words.
A dying lover. A decadent marquis. Two seasons in the memoirs of a Spanish Don Juan.
The Marquis of Bradomín is famously "ugly, Catholic and sentimental", and an unrepentant seducer. In Autumn Sonata a letter calls him back to the ancient Palace of Brandeso in Galicia, where Concha, the love of his youth, lies gravely ill. Among faded gardens, autumn rain and candlelight, their old passion flares up one last time.
In Winter Sonata the marquis, no longer young, rides into snowy Estella to serve the pretender Don Carlos during the Carlist War. Amid royal intrigue, soldiers and convent walls, his past begins to catch up with him.
Ramón del Valle-Inclán wrote his four Sonatas as perfumed, musical prose, and they made him a star of Spanish modernism. The autumn sonata remains a school classic in Spain.

Reading Sonata de otoño. Sonata de invierno in Passage
Passage sets the book as a quiet, paginated reader in Spanish. Read at your own pace, and when a sentence stops you, tap it. You get:
- a natural translation of that exact sentence,
- a short note on the grammar, in plain words,
- the key words, which you can save with the sentence they came from,
- all of it in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish or Portuguese, whichever you read best.
It's marked advanced, with richer vocabulary and longer sentences. If it feels heavy, start with an intermediate Spanish book and come back to it. The words you save come back later in short review games, so the book keeps teaching after you close it.
